Galleria
Mall
|
Shopping
|
The Riverchase Galleria is the most
popular shopping mall in Alabama with over 15
million visitors per year. An indoor mall, it
allows you to get out of Birmingham's hot summer
weather and frigid winters. Come and see for
yourself!

Ross
Bridge Golf Course
|
Golf
|
This is probably the most famous of
Birmingham's golf courses. It is a part of the
Robert Trent Golf Trail which runs throughout
the state of Alabama. Adjacent to it is the
Renaissance
Hotel-- one of my
Recommended Hotels for Birmingham.

Speaking of the Robert Trent Golf
Trail, this link will take you to all of those
courses. I don't know much about golf (go
figure) but this website can point you in the
right direction.

Aside from the courses above,
Birmingham has literally dozens of Public and
Private courses for you to play. This link will
take you to Birmingham's

|
Sixteenth Street
Baptist Church National Historic
Landmark
|
History:
Civil
Rights
|
For true visitors to Birmingham this is
almost a must-see location due to the 1963
bombing and its importance to the Civil Rights
movement. Currently undergoing renovation and
there is no website yet.
|
|
Birmingham
Civil Rights Institute
|
History:
Civil
Rights
|
Adults who are interested in the
history of Alabama may want to visit without
their kids since this subject matter may be too
intense for younger children.
|
|
Statue
of Vulcan
(Vulcan
Park)
|
History:
Steel
|
This is another must-see. If you ever
tell someone you visited Birmingham, they will
ask you about the "Naked Statue" and you don't
want to tell them you didn't see it. It doesn't
take long-- so stop by and take your pictures.
|
|
Sloss
Furnaces
|
History:
Steel
|
Admission is
Free! Steel is an important part of
Birmingham's history. Most people don't know
that Birmingham didn't exist until after the
Civil War and only came about because of
America's need for steel. Watch the actual
furnace operated (particularly the once a month
iron ore demonstration). This attraction also
shows how segregation worked as an institution
since the business was run in a completely
segregated manner.

Barber
Motorsports Museum and Park
|
History:
Racing
|
As a girl, I could not care less about
850 motorcycles, even if they are antiques. But
guys are different and they seem to like this
place very much.

|
Alabama
Sports Hall of Fame
|
History:
Sports
|
Admission is
Free! Dads like this place because it
reminds them of their Alabama sports heros from
when they were young... but your kids may not be
too interested. So visit without them!

|
Talladega
Speedway and
International
MotorSports Hall of Fame
|
Racing
AND
History
|
Not something I would want to do over
and over, but it is fun for the whole family to
go to one of the races at Talledega. The track
does tours when there isn't an event coming up
and the Hall of Fame museum next door has over
100 vehicles in six buildings plus some
interactive stuff.

|
Southern
Museum of Flight
/ Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame
|
History
|
I think everyone is fascinated by
flight and this museum is worth a visit.

|
Heart
of Dixie Railroad Museum
|
History
|
If you are a railroad buff this is a
blast.
|
|
Birmingham
Museum of Art
|
History
|
Admission is
Free! The younger you are the less
likely this is to be fun or interesting.
|
|
Birmingham
Botanical Gardens
|
History
|
Admission is
Free! I don't know if this is truly a
"historical" site but I am including it anyways.
I doubt this will hold much interest for the
guys, but it is payback for some of the other
places we girls got dragged to! (Hint: Guys--
this place is kinda romantic!)
|
|
Arlington
Antebellum Home and Garden
|
History
|
Arlington is the only antebellum
mansion in Birmingham because it was built 20
years before the city was founded! More
interesting to those old enough to appreciate
it.
|
|
Alabama
Jazz Hall of Fame
|
History
|
For adults who are interested in Jazz.
|
|
Alabama
Historical Radio Museum
|
History
|
Not for everyone but worth a visit.
|
|
DeSoto
Caverns
|
History
|
I am not sure adults would want to go
here without their kids, but I will leave it on
the list anyway. There are not many show caves
in the Southeast and most people will enjoy
visiting this but small children will be the
most fascinated. Take note that it is 36 miles
southeast of Birmingham.
