While the colleges in Birmingham are not a big as the University of Alabama and Auburn University, Birmingham is the hometown of several other colleges that host numerous events in the area. These include the University of Alabama - Birmingham (UAB) with its famous hospital system and its football team that plays at Legion Field, Samford University, and Birmingham Southern College. The NCAA and SEC also make use of Birmingham as a "Host City" for many of their events... in 2010 this included the NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament and the SEC Baseball Tournament. Because the schools are not as large, events at local colleges do not tend to take up all of the rooms in the city so you have more of a selection of hotels to choose from. As always, I recommend that you book your stay at one of my Favorite Hotels and then if a room is not available there you can expand your search. In general these events are going to require visitors to stay in hotels along the Interstate 65 corridor. Events at UAB and Birmingham Southern will generally fill the Downtown hotels first and then move down I-65 to Homewood and Hoover. Events at Samford will fill hotels in the Homewood Area first and then the Hoover and Summit/280 areas.
