I hate to talk bad about
hotels that I may one day be working for, but tourists need
to know about some problems with these hotels before you
visit Birmingham. I have put the severity of the problems
(major or minor) in parenthesis:
Hotels w/ Outdoor
Room Entrances (Major):
In general you
want to avoid these for two reasons:
1) Security: Literally
any Tom, Dick, or Harry can walk right up to your
room's door without having to pass the front desk
clerk or through a secure hotel entrance.
NOT GOOD!
2) Weather: Birmingham,
Alabama has either very hot weather or very cold
weather. Very few weeks are just right. Which means
that you are walking from your climate controlled room
straight into the elements. NOT FUN!
Hotels in the Airport Area
(major):
Visitors to
Birmingham may be accustomed to cities where the
airport hotels are set up for business executives.
That is not true in Birmingham! There are very few
hotels in that area and they aren't near any
restaurants or malls. The whole area around the
airport is somewhat crime-ridden and I cannot think
off-hand of any good reason for tourists to stay in a
hotel there.
Residence Inns
(minor):
A part of the
Mariott chain, it is designed for long-term stays. I
had a friend who stayed in one in Hoover and liked
everything about it with one exception. He called me
from the room phone and we talked for about half an
hour one night. But even though it was a local call,
the hotel charged him 50 cents per minute! That gets
very expensive very quick. If you stay here,
USE YOUR CELL PHONE!
Holiday Inn Express
(minor):
Considering the
amenities these are the most reasonably priced hotels
in Birmingham. However, there is one thing I don't
like about them. Every hotel chain has a signature
theme and the dweebs in management at the Holiday Inn
Express national headquarters chose "cinnamon" as
their chain's signature. That would be fine if they
limited themselves to serving cinnamon rolls for
breakfast... but these idiots went and gave their
toiletries a cinammon-flavored scent.
So unless you want to go
to your business meeting or sporting event smelling
like the "World's Largest Breakfast Pastry" you MUST
bring your own soap and shampoo!
